One of the first questions people ask after starting semaglutide is whether they still get to keep their morning coffee. The short answer is usually yes, but a few things change once the medication starts slowing how quickly your stomach empties.

Why coffee can feel different now

Semaglutide slows gastric emptying, which means food and liquid linger in your stomach longer than they used to. Coffee is acidic and, for some people, mildly irritating to an empty stomach. On its own that was rarely a problem before, but combined with slower digestion it can occasionally add to nausea or that too-full feeling in the first few weeks.

Practical ways to keep your coffee comfortable

• Have a few bites of food before your first cup rather than drinking it on a completely empty stomach.
• Notice whether very large or very hot cups sit worse than a smaller, warm one.
• Watch heavy creamers and sugary syrups, which are high in fat and sugar and can worsen nausea.
• Stay hydrated with water alongside coffee, since caffeine is mildly dehydrating.

What about caffeine and appetite

Caffeine is a mild appetite suppressant on its own, so some people notice they are simply not hungry in the morning. That is generally fine, but skipping food entirely for long stretches can make protein and fluid targets harder to hit over the day. If your appetite is very low, a small protein-forward breakfast is usually a better anchor than coffee alone.
