Why Does Tirzepatide Cause More Burping and What Helps?

Plenty of people are caught off guard by how much more they burp after starting tirzepatide. It is one of the less talked about side effects, but it is common and usually nothing to worry about.

Where the burping comes from

Tirzepatide slows gastric emptying, so food and swallowed air stay in the stomach longer. That trapped air has to go somewhere, and the result is more frequent burping, sometimes with a taste of whatever you last ate. Delayed digestion can also produce a bit more gas overall.

Habits that tend to help

  • Eat more slowly, since fast eating means swallowing more air.
  • Limit carbonated drinks, which add gas directly to your stomach.
  • Skip chewing gum and drinking through straws, both of which increase swallowed air.
  • Choose smaller, lighter meals rather than large heavy ones.

When to mention it

Burping by itself is a nuisance, not a red flag. But if it comes with severe or persistent upper abdominal pain, ongoing vomiting, or pain that radiates to your back, contact your clinician, since those symptoms need to be evaluated rather than managed at home.
